Assignment for The Killing Fields

******** Movie Review--- The Killing Fields *******

Instructions: write a 2-3 page, typed, double spaced, review of The Killing Fields.

In doing so be sure to:
1. Briefly summarize the story, particularly the highlights.

2. Argue whether or not you think the movie was an effective way for you to lean about the subject matter. (Think about questions you can answer in your paper for this part.)

3. Evaluate the film as a “feature film.” This is where you give your opinion of the movie as a whole. Pay attention to the sets, the costumes, the music, the story, the acting, the plot, the message of the film etc.

4. Give the movie a rating of 1 to 5 stars. (1 is the lowest; 5 is the highest) paying attention to the way the story, through the creation of the movie was told. You must explain yourself completely to earn full credit.

Today we viewed a blog that someone posted. (If you know, respect the individuals right of privacy and do not include any names. My question to you is this.

Had something like this been posted in China, critical of the government, ... ok, nevermind that question.

Seriously, there were many points that the blogger brougth up that are worth a discussion. Please read the questions below and chime in with your opinion. BE CIVIL AND MAKE YOUR POINTS ELOQUENTLY.

What issues do you think were presented well? Which ones were not? Is a blog like the one posted this morning an acceptable forum for discussing these things? Why or why not?

We all have opinions, did this "blogger" step over the line? Why or why not?

Were there any issues that you feel really should be addressed? What kind of solution can you offer to any of the concerns mentioned?

If the government declares Martial Law, in which all civil rights are suspended, and it is legal for the government to do this, do citizens have a right to continue protesting? If so, why? What other options would they have?

What does the quote "The political criminals of those days weren't people who went out and committed some "crime" for the sake of politics. They were the sacrificial objects that politics demanded" mean? What example from the text can you find to support this?

What was the worst thing that happened to the man in this story? Why do you say it was the worse? Be specific.

Gentlemen,

Read the article called "China's Mobile Death Fleet." Post your comments about any area of the article that may be controversial. Do you feel that this is an acceptable way of dealing with prisoners sentenced to death? Why or why not? For those of you who post later then the others, ask questions for others to answer. Today we learned about the ghost city in China, the one the government made for people to move into. Please comment about what you saw. Is this any different then any other country that spends money just to put people to work? What other countries have spent money just to keep people working? Was it done any differently? Does it make a difference?

What we should talk about during spring term

We should talk about Criminology or Sociology of Culture!!

Question 1 for discussion is this:

You must reply to my invitation to write on the blog with a topic that you want to talk about first. As this is a Sociology class, I believe you should first learn a little about that. Your choice is simple...read on your own and then suggest a topic to begin our class with, or take the easy way out, ignore my request and we start with Sociology 101.

Let's get it moving.

New PG Course Pilot

Here it is...this is the first attempt at creating this new course for PG's at South Kent School. The class will be Sociology of Sports, and will be a hybrid course....that is students will meet in class for the first week, but will then meet only once a week after that. Students are expected to read and research on their own and then to post their work online in our community classroom. This will be closed to the rest of the world for now, but if the class would benefit from outside discussion, more voices can be heard from.
