Tank Man

If the government declares Martial Law, in which all civil rights are suspended, and it is legal for the government to do this, do citizens have a right to continue protesting? If so, why? What other options would they have?

  1. yes they do i think because the people in the movie were trying to save and get their children and there is nothing wrong with that. and they do have the right to keep protesting. because it is something they believe in. i mean, the government cant stop people from DOING WORK!!!!! :-)

  2. People should have the right to peacfully assemble. I would say that the chinese government has the right to arrest anyone who they deem a threat. In this case the massacre seemed be an attepmt be the government to scare the people into submission.

  3. i agree with nate people should have the right to peacefully assemble and the chinese goverent does have the right to arrest anyone breaking the law but they do not have the right to take someones life. I also believe that it is cowardly of the chinese goverment to cover up what they did instead of taking repsonsablity for their actions. Every culture at some point has messed up, its not how bad you messed up but what you learn from it and how you move forward. Does the Chinese goverment have that much pride that they cannot swallow it, admit they were wrong, offer a memorial for those who died and promise it will never happen again? what do u guys think?

  4. I agree with Nate. They should have a right to assemble peacefully. They should still be able to gather like the parents did the following morning. Some were going to see where their children were. That is something that a law should not ban. Imagine if you were the parent and your kid didn't come home on the night of one of the biggest massacres in Chinese history. How would you feel? (Yes this counts as my question to the next person.)

  5. would feel very bad because my parents could die in the protest and because the government was massacring the citizens.

  7. i guess im gunna have to jump on the bandwagon and agree with nate too. The Chinese military forces completely overreacted to these protesters. I feel the Government felt threatened by the students and didn't know how to react to them, so they ended up sending in ground troops and tanks to take care of them lethally.

And Marco why are you picking on Ms. Yao shes a wonderful lady, even if she chirps her own country... how odd.

  8. i also believe that the Chinese have the right to form a meeting and fight for what they feel is right for their community. also, if the government does not listen the civilians have the right to throw rocks to get respected and heard. Now the police should not be able to use real ammunition against the civilians, they should look for other to stop the riot without killing

  9. Interesting....your passions are coming out in this thread. However, you seem to have drifted away from the question, but this is ok. In what other ways can people protest their government other than by throwing rocks and moltof cocktails?
Nate..on the board. Excellent. Marco...great catch on the grammar. Ms. Yao...2 thoughtful osts? Unprecidented. Ricky...speaking for the common man. Sal? Not much to say, sorry. Where is Shousuke?
